Castelli Mercato is a neighbourhood Italian bakery, espresso bar and mercato at 13 Hatton Drive, just off Fiddlers Green Road in Ancaster. We bake New York style and Roman style pizza, build focaccia sandwiches on bread made in our own kitchen, fill the pastry case with bomboloni and Sicilian cannoli every morning, and line the shelves with imported Italian fine foods — the kind of small Italian market Hamilton’s west end has been looking for.

How it started

Three chapters, one small Italian mercato

From Castelli Cucina on James Street to Ancaster

Castelli Mercato launched from its big brother, Castelli Cucina on James Street in downtown Hamilton, and opened in Ancaster so the neighbourhood could get the same Italian baking, coffee and casual eats without the drive downtown. Alex Mancini has led the shop as manager and chef since 2019, and the bakers, pizza cooks and baristas behind the counter are all local. Regulars from Meadowlands, Ancaster Village, Maple Lane and Parkview Heights treat us as their everyday Italian market.

New York and Roman style pizza, focaccia sandwiches and espresso

Our ovens turn out New York style pizza whole or by the slice — NY Pepperoni, Margherita “DOP” and the NY Diavola finished with Castelli’s house peperoncino oil — next to Roman style trays such as Patate e Salsiccia and Mortadella, Pistachio & Burrata. House-made focaccia becomes the Italian SuperHero, Porchetta, Prosciutto Arugula and Veal Parmigiana sandwiches, while the espresso bar pulls espresso, cappuccino and lattes all day. The pastry counter is restocked each morning with bomboloni, Sicilian cannoli, biscotti and cookies.

A neighbourhood mercato: dine in, take out or shop the shelves

Grab a slice and an espresso at the counter, order pizza and focaccia sandwiches online for takeout or delivery across Ancaster and west Hamilton, or take home a frozen dinner tray — veal parmigiana, chicken parmigiana or meatballs in sugo — and reheat it when you are ready. Our shelves are stocked with imported Italian fine foods including dry pasta, sauces, olive oil and specialty products, available in store only. We are open Tuesday to Sunday, 8 am to 8 pm, and closed Mondays.
